Originally I was worried that replacing the 10" filters I was using would slow things down, but I think the 7" actually work better due to being fully submersed longer I made the mistake of purchasing these a few months in advance prior to my old filters dying.
Unfortunately, I am now past the 30 day return policy and am stuck with one working and one broken filter. If you buy these check them right away because, as other reviewers have also mentioned, sometimes they break somewhere in the shipping process. It made quite a mess when I unpacked it too.
These are a very good filter and easy to clean. The water where I live is more like rust with some water added and it is very expensive. I pre filter first with a Brita and then run that through my Berkey. I must clean my filters and inside of my tanks every single month as the ceramic filters are getting very clogged with what the Brita did not catch.
My Brita filters last 3 weeks, sometimes 4 but are then full with rust and other sediments. Bleaching the insides of the tank and running the bleach water through the spigot is very important. Also clean and bleach the entire lid of your Berkey. Using a firm toothbrush or softened 3m scouring pad, scrub pushing away from the thread mounts and rinse well.
After cleaning, do a run through and discard that water I head for the garden with it. I never waste water. Then you're ready to roll for another month! I use them with my Berkey system. They make our rusty well water clean and good tasting. We went back to Berkey ceramic. They are easy to clean, I just scrub them once a week with a clean brush that I keep just for the filters, and rinse. I can see that they are working, the sides of the top compartment, where I put water are always rusty and dirty and the bottom compartment, with the filtered water is always nice and clean.
These filters never came apart, like the other filters I've tried. Last for a long time. Sent them to Africa as Sent them to Africa as back-ups to a travel Berkey for the missionary team. A good place to start is figure out which style of an icemaker you have The ice maker will not fill with water - There are a few things to check for A very LARGE problem in the last few years has been the self piercing shut off valve clogging up with calcium and junk!
Replace the self piercing shut off valve with a drill type shut off valve. If the fill spout hose is clear of ice, possible the fill valve has failed.
You can also make up a test cord and put volts to the fill valve alone to see if it is capable of passing water in to a bucket. If the water supply lines are ok and the fill valve is functioning properly, you probably have a icemaker problem and may need a new one.
This is often a low water problem, the fill valve and shut off valve are bad for getting a build up inside them that slows the water pressure to the icemaker.
I find it best to replace them both for this type of problem. There are several things to check for. Go for the easy stuff first, make sure the icemaker is level, some of the plastic liner fridge's will move and allow the icemaker to tilt over and leak.
This will allow the new water to fill on top of an icemaker that still has a ice cube or two left inside the body, if you have had trouble with black specs in your ice cubes, this may have been the beginning of your finish problem on the icemaker body. This gear is bad for breaking and the icemaker quits turning to eject the ice.
You can remove the front cover to see the gear. This is a common parts breakdown of the older style icemakers GE used many of this style.
The water fill adjustment screw will change the fill volumes by changing the fill time. One half to one full turn usually approx is equal to 20cc 0. The correct fill is usually to cc 4.
When a water valve is replaced the fill volumes must be re-checked!! Many newer refrigerators with ice and water dispensers have built in replaceable water filters. After 6 months to a year, these filters will become full of chemicals that they have remove from the water and are becoming plugged up. Flex style ice makers have a plastic tray that turns and flexes to release the ice cubes.
The plastic tray often gets a calcium build up on the plastic tray, the bottom of the cube sections will feel rough if you rub your finger on it. This roughness holds the cubes in place and prevents them from be dispensed during the ice maker cycle.
