Because knowledge is healthy
In this brewery became the start of the local Greenalls empire. When I started needing help out of my chair, that scared me, and that is when I started the upper body exercising. You can always sub in my BBQ recipe http: Wendy—Try the Organic Valley lactose free milk. Why are these false products allowed on the market while the Food and Drug take good products off the market? Sounds like you need someone to help sort out all the details and unfortunately it would not be advisable for me to do this in a blog format. My father unexpectedly passed away back in October after a long difficult battle which included diabetes and complications of that.

Take a walk with friends. We are where we are due to neglect of our bodies for a long period of time. So I figure that if I spent the next 62 years working on my good health, that is pay back. I just came across some wonderful receipes for diabetics. This is a 7th Day Adventist channel on t. They are some of the healthiest people in the world, along with the Jews. They have a cooking class everyday.
You can take out the receipes and put them under the cover to keep them clean while cooking and the binder keeps them from flying all over. They give you lots of information of what each food will do to your body, and then if it is negative, they will give you an alternative. The receipes are the kind of food that we all eat, nothing strange.
You might want to take a look at both websites. They are filled with all sorts of info that will help diabetics. To I hate my life: If you know that your liver is libel to dump into your blood stream in the middle of the night, then be careful what you feed your liver the night before.
Eat veggies, and protein after 6 p. Wake up hungry in the middle of the night? Also, try to get 8 hours of sleep per night. I sleep in bed until my breathing wakes me up. Then I sleep in a recliner, but I do try to get 8 hours of sleep. So far I am up 6 hours, normal used to be 3 hours. For every hour you deprive yourself of sleep, it is every hour you are giving diabetes a helping hand to destroy you. When I was working, I would have given my eye teeth for permission to sleep that long and now I struggle to get all 8 hours of sleep at once.
I get 8 hours, but it is broken sleep, 6 at night and small naps during the day. I also learned I am extremely vitamin D deficient. I guess I got to get a prescription for that. Perhaps that will help with my morning numbers. Thanks for the positive feedback. Well that has to be the most humbling experience of my life.
You are actually lucky to discover your diabetes so soon. I was in denial for years and now have numb feet, retinophathy, and kidney disease. When I finally got tested, my blood sugar was in the range. I finally got everything on track and began to realize how grateful I am for diabetes. If not for diabetes, I probably would not be the healthy, active and somewhat muscular old lady that I am. Dear I hatemy life I agree with David.
Your old life is over, but you have a brilliant future ahead of you. Begin by leaving all white foods alone. You can add them back later if your body can handle them.
This is a good time to start learning about what insulin is and is not, and then start working with your body. In fact, Prevention magazine says that the best weight loss diet is to eat protein with every carb that goes into your mouth. It causes you to fill full faster and takes longer to empty out, so you feel satisfied longer. I began my journey with a journal, however; not being the kind of person that can stay with that for very long, that ended quickly.
I did learn about some of my foibles and weaknesses from it, and some of my strengths. Read some of Marys blogs on this site. Mary, I have shown a 3 lb weight loss. First one in 2 years. I have been doing that and my weak leg is now stronger. You are young, so I am assuming that you work. If you have a sit down job, set a timer I use my cell phones timer to remind yourself to get up and walk around every 15 minutes.
Keep your filters clean. That would be your bowels, kidneys, skin, and lungs. They help our body to throw off the sugar.
The cleaner the filters are, the lower the blood glucose is. At first it all seems confusing, and time consuming, but if you make your changes a little at a time, you eventually do not even want to go back to the old way you used to live. Your reward will be a healthy blood glucose, weight loss if you need it , toned muscles, a happier outlook on life, and no amputations.
You will make lots of new friends along the way that will greatly appreciate you. Stick with David also, he is a great Mentor. Read his articles, they remove the fear and give you courage. Shine the light of education on this monster under the bed. So i went to the doc for a yeast infection and noticed i lost 14 pounds. I was pounds. I am now pound.
Doctor tells me it was a yeast infection and proceeds to say everything is fine. I asked the doctor for a pee test and a glucose test.. The doctor tells me to come back for another test this coming Monday. I went Friday and asked to see another doctor and they prescribed metformin. My question i started taking the medicine Friday night and did not test till yesterday evening.
My test came back so i was hopeful i was getting it down. I took metformin and food at around 9pm last night and i wake up with bg Actually, the best part of your life just started! You now have the opportunity to be in the best health that you ever had. You simply got a wake-up call to start respecting your body by getting down to your optimum weight with good food and great exercise.
Then, at around 8: The, right before bed, which is around Ok, it is clear to me now that it definitely was carbs in the form of starch and sugar even the small amount I was eating that was driving my Dawn Phenomenon. I can say that again today, it was 99 this morning! Now, it has been staying low all day too not just the morning readings so, for me, the answer is not low carb but NO carb other than low carb veg Maybe once my weight is back to normal range I can add a little back but for now it is NO CARBS except what comes in low carb veg such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage, etc.
I am even staying away from tomatoes, onions, etc. This is not forever, but only till my weight comes down a little. Once my weight is down, the ratio of normal hormones to body weight insulin, etc. Oh I forgot to mention, the Mexican peoples roast them in the oven with a little oil and spices and eat them just like we do peanuts. Very tasty like that too! I always eat mine like beans or soup though because they really do taste a lot like a snack food such as peanuts or potato chips when roasted and like any salty snack it is too easy to eat too many of them!
I am sure they are not using Olive oil when they roast them either and I try to avoid the other oils. Garbanzo Beans are another name for chickpeas. They are extremely healthy and contain somethings that are known to reduce blood sugar amino acids? They are about the same as all other dried beans as far as carbs go. If you are eating any form of starchy carbs, they are a good choice and they are also high fiber! I soak and cook mine much longer than normal beans.
They look a little bit like peanuts in that they contain a double bean in each bean.. They are in fact touted as a health food by many. But it was still too much carb for my body. Perhaps when I lose enough weight I can add them back into my diet because they are very tasty once you get hooked on them. They are also used to make dip called Hummus where they are mashed up. Below is a site about Hummus which is made of Chickpeas Garbanzo is the Spanish word for Chickpeas They taste a bit like a navy bean but not exactly at all…LOL you simply have to try them to see if you like them.
I cook mine in a rich smoked chicken broth with celery, onion, carrot and a dash of garlic in it as seasonings. I did not like them the first time I tried them, then I tried them again because of the health thing… finally I was hooked on them! If your body can tolerate healthy carbohydrates, it is worth developing a taste for these little beans.
I am very happy this morning. In my last note I said I was going to try a day with zero carbs to find out if it is the carbs driving the DP. So I ate only protein and low carb veg yesterday and today my FBG is !
That is so much difference I am usually happy if it is only I am convinced that, at least in myself, it is the carbs driving the Dawn Phenomenon. I have eaten low carb before with only 20 carbs a day in starchy type carbs without this big difference. I also showed a nice weight loss. I know it was probably partly water, but it is finally low enough I will count it as a loss and not simply water weight.
I will not get too excited until this works for more than one day. I will continue without starchy or fructose carbs today and see what happens tomorrow morning.
You are so right that we tend to program ourselves for failure. That being said, have you thought of the type of carbs? I also take a 24 hour basal insulin to help with this. Now onto tastier topics!
The darker and more robust the chocolate the better. Mary I know but we all have a sweet tooth and sometimes it hits us at night. You should read Davids article on chocolate. There are some really delicious tasting sugar free chocolates out there these days. However, I also like my chocolate with nuts.
There are 3 places that I know of that makes delicious, sugar free chocolates that diabetics can have. Atkins peanut butter cups. The dark chocolate is really delicious on these and the taste far surpasses Reeses Peanut Butter cups. It is located on highway Pacheco Pass in California. They have all kinds of sugar free chocolates. A very wide variety for diabetics. We do not go there often, but when we do, I stock up on them. Some with nuts, some with fruit, haystacks, chocolate and coconut, and none of them leave a bitter taste.
The next one I do not know the name of the store, I can only say it is located near the food court at Valley Plaza Mall. They have a small selection of sugar free chocolates. I agree with you William on most everything you said above with the exception of the almost impossible time shedding pounds.
It simply is more difficult for us to lose weight but each pound we lose counts more because each pound makes such a drastic change in our health. Metabolic Syndrome people are NOT lazy but they are often very tired.
And even at that many of us can and do work regular folks into the ground! Because we have struggled with this all our lives, we are very hard working determined people with more will power than most. Will power is like making a rope. Every time you resist a craving or urge you are adding another string to that rope and making it stronger and everytime you give in you are cutting a string and making it weaker.
One of the reasons people with Metabolic Syndrome have such a difficult time losing weight is they are carbohydrate sensitive and really only 2 things work for this.
Either starvation diet not healthy or a extremely low carb diet such as David keeps recommending And of course, exercise is an even more important addition to our diet because it helps with insulin resistance and processing the insulin better helps us to lose weight easier by keeping our BG in a more normal range.
Personally I believe they have it reversed. Now having said that, I want to state that does not give us an excuse to not lose weight. A person with an illness needs to do whatever they can to get well or as close to not sick as possible In our case that means Diet and Exercise with meds as needed.
I said something about my 80 year old Diabetic mother losing 40 pounds and getting off meds the other day and she quickly corrected me. She said that was last years news! Her weight loss is now 60 pounds! She lost her weight the hard way. They sometimes refer to this as portion control, but as the portions at the seniors center are actually on the small size of normal, that means she is actually eating a starvation diet. Not an easy or healthy way to lose weight, but it worked for her and she is off meds now.
Could it be possible my DP is actually caused in part by my dietary intake of carbs? I am going to go without any starch or sugar carbs other than low carb veg for a day or two and see what happens to the DP.
Diabetes is a spectrum disease. Essentially, HFS is only broken down in the liver, unlike normal sugars which are broken down and absorbed in the digestive system.
I disgree with the author on one point — people who are type II are type two because they are lazy and eat too much. Some people have a condition called pre diabetic metabolic syndrome. That syndrome is a collection of defects with the way the body handles food. Generally, people who have it will gain weight at the drop of hat and have an almost impossible time shedding the pounds.
The fiber slows down the rate at which the sugar is absorbed and metabolized. It also helps you eat less since it gives you a sense of saity. Ron, do you have the ability and inclination to consult a different MD? If you have been taking metformin, then it seems as if your MD believes you have type 2. Is the history you describe above been with metformin? With any other medication? What supplements are you taking? Have you heard of Lipoic Acid alpha or R- lipoic, either one?
Helps prevent complications of diabetes. I say that having been controlling my diabetes type 2 with diet, exercise, and supplements for 20 years and am still — knock on wood — in good shape.
But I have had more ups and downs than you seem to have. So anyway — if I were you I would go consult an MD who does specialize in diabetes at least for a series of tests and consultation. But you do sound as if you have been doing well for a long time, so congratulations.
Hi Mary Thanks for your advise. My Doctor knows nothing about Diabetes. My biggest worry has been my eyes, no problems with anything as yet, knock on wood. For 20 years I have had the high am bs, but it goes down to about around noon, then I have my carrot juice then it drops to normal, and at bedtime it is normal or very near it. My A1c has gone back and forth for the last 20 years between 6. About 8 years ago the American Diabetes asso. I did not take the metformin last night and not going to any more.
Got up this AM and thought it was going to be sky high, and it was go figure. You might try switching to protein for your evening snack. There are only 3 types of foods.
Fats, Proteins and Carbohydrates. The digestion rate is slowest for Fats, next slowest for Proteins and fastest for Carbs. So if you want to defeat Dawn Phenomenon you need something that will stay in your system as long as possible, but not necessarily raise your Blood Glucose a lot like carbs. Also it helps to have something Acidic with your protein snack.
A shot of apple cider vinegar and low fat cheese works well for me, but some people take vinegar pills I have heard. I used to eat pickles with my cheese, but that was just too much salt for me, so I switched to cider vinegar both cheese and pickles are high sodium foods. A type 1 usually has stopped making insulin. Most but not all type 2 diabetics are overweight.
If you are diabetic and overweight the chances are you are type 2 but the best way to tell is to ask your Doctor! I have been reading the comments about what has worked for others and am going to do the vinegar before bedtime.
Tried for the first time last night—at 7AM was Not great but better than some. I plan to test very morning for a week and chart the results. Best to all, Anne. Does that mean that a type 2 could drink a pint of a high fructose drink and without any meds there bs would be normal 3 to 4 hours later, if so I have been reading the wrong things, or not understanding what I did read.
Would you mind giving me an indicator of a type 1 or a type 2. Thank you David If thats the case then I can forget Victoza. I have always thought that if my body can take care of the carrot juice, that I was a type 1. But would really like to know your opinion. And I thank you very much. Mary I did a little investigating about magnesium. I belong to Kaiser and they allow you to go back on your test results and study them.
I found out that I have traditionally low on magnesium! I am hoping you have solved one more piece of my leg pain puzzle. I will get a jar of magnesium today and start taking it. In the blood test 1. I am praying that this is the last piece to the leg pain puzzle! Yes, the dawn phenomenon is something that both type 1s and 2s have. And no, Victoza is just for type 2s. Hello again David I really appreciate this site and all your help, my Doctor has never even heard of the Dawn P And I am really confused about all this!
Is the Dawn P in a class by itself or would it be a type 1 or type 2. And was wondering why that drug Victoza came when I was shearching for a type 1 drug, when its a type 2 med. All the Doctors are getting the big bucks, and your doing all the work, not fair, but sure glad your here. And thanks for the advice Mary about the milk stuff will try it. It may or may not be safe for people with kidney disease.
Victoza and Byetta are the same type of drug, i. They are technically somewhat different and in practice they are also different. In practice, Victoza is taken once a day, while Byetta is twice a day. Victoza also seems to cause less nausea.
But a long-acting version of Byetta may soon be approved by the FDA. If so, then people would take it just once a week. Is that Victoza a mirror drug of Byetta? If so why not take Byetta? I mean there must be some difference or you would be taking the tried and true one not the new one. As regards Dawn Phenomenon, I was very excited this morning. I always have the Placebo affect in mind anytime I try something new. I started taking those Milk Thistle capsules last week 1 with evening meal and I did notice my morning BG is better this morning.
That was the only change I made and I find it hard to believe it is my subconscious experiencing the Placebo affect while I sleep…LOL That stuff must actually help some folks. I think when something helps one person, that does not mean the same supplement will help someone else. BUT if someone tells me it helped them, I will usually try it and see if it helps me. I also had an evening snack but that was as usual for me. Oh I forgot I do have one other change, I am off the Glypizide again hurray!
It also causes weight gain in me. The way I got off the Glypizide was to go on an extremely low carb diet, just like you recommend David! In fact if I had been taking it I would have had Hypoglycemia a lot in the last 2 days.
I recommend anyone with DP to try the Milk Thistle and also if you are on one those drugs like Glypizide or Glyburide you might want to check and see if they are causing DP. In your opinion would this be a good drug for the dawn P. Metformin is not working for me and has way to many side affects. Would be greatful for your advise.
Thank you Ron Schumaker A 77 year old male. From everything that I have heard about Victoza I think that it is a great drug for controlling diabetes. Just be sure to start slow so as to minimize the side effects. Get a new doctor! And you can contact your State Department of Health and file a formal complaint against this doctor!!!! I think I need to extend my sympathy to you! I wish there was easy answer to this problem.
I am so sorry for you because I have been down this road myself. We have been without insurance due to unemployment for over 2 years. He will not give ANY refills. I have to go to see him to get a refill if he is in a good mood, he will let me slide a extra month or so.
My Doctor costs me more than my food and medicine together! So, I have found a couple of cheaper ways on the strips. I refuse to take any medicine that is not a generic. The doctor will generally know of a generic drug that will do about the same as the nongeneric. I am on Metformin and glypizide and lovastatin and lisinopril I was able to get stable with the generics just as well as if I was on the more expensive stuff.
No one is using you to test out their meds! Is there no cheaper way? I sure hope this helps you because I believe Testing is out best weapon next to diet and exercise. Mail order pharmacy prescription services are going WAY up. All figures are for 90 day supply. I bet you can guess what category my victoza, novolog, and levamir fall into…. Does anyone know what meter is the least expensive for test strips and lancets?
I read the article and realize Byetta is not for me. Just get on the bike and do it! I have to say that the book The Secret has been so helpful to me. I have seen over and over how true it all is. You can contol how you feel with what you think, so just concentrate on changing your thinking, and exercising will become a joy!!!
I think 14 pounds is a wonderful amount to lose. It is so slow and long losing weight when one is diabetic but then each pound seems to count more! I know that even 3 or 4 pounds can make a lot of difference in my health so I can imagine that 14 pounds made a world of difference for you! Thanks for the heads up on the depression. I find that music and movement helps with that too. Hard to be depressed if you have some happy music playing and also getting out and moving around, even if to the grocery store.
These 2 things help me the most. Suzy, be sure and read that article from the link Karen gave us! There is a reason Byetta is not for folks with Kidney problems.
I will start with 5 minutes, then later another5 minutes … etc until I have 30 minutes in. Tomorrow, 6 minutes and so on until I work up to at a time 30 minute rides.
That worked for me before without a terrible strain because it was increased a bit at a time. My doctor wants me to take my meds one hour before bedtime, so I try to have something to eat because the meds I take would eat a hole in my stomach otherwise, i. That is a good thing, now I can feel free to lose another 14 lbs and not worry about yoyoing.
My numbers are all within the normal range except my weight but has been hard work, getting through a lot of depression now I just tell myself it is the disease that is talking and trying to boss me around, and that brings it to a halt. Depression is nothing you are doing, it is just what it is, nothing more, it comes with the turf.
Once I realized it was simply the disease trying to control me, it went away. When I was working, weather I wanted to or not, I had to get up in the morning, get ready for work and arrive there on time. I had a self starting job, so I had to know what I would be doing each day I arrived. All of that took discipline.
Now I am learning that I bother for myself, not someone else. This was especially hard piece of news after my husband died and I was living totally alone. I would go for weeks without seeing another human. Finally I started working people back into my life, at my pace. Now I have a social life I feel in control over and I am beginning to redevelop my work ethic again so that I have things to get done during the day.
I still take all day Saturday to rest and recharge for the next week. I hope this helps others going through diabetes and depression. Please, please remember, it is the disease that is doing this, not you. If it was a snake biting you over and over, you would stop it immediately and fight back. I also let God help me all day long, it helps. Silymarin, a flavolignan from milk thistle, is used primarily to manage various liver diseases.
Placebo-controlled clinical studies show its efficacy in reducing aminotransferases in alcoholic liver disease 9 and conclusions from a systematic review suggest usefulness of silymarin for liver cirrhosis Milk thistle was also shown to reduce liver toxicity associated with chemotherapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia Studies for other types of hepatic disease are flawed 10 Data from a randomized controlled study indicate benefits of milk thistle supplementation in improving glycemic profile in type II diabetic patients In vitro and animal studies suggest that flavonoids in milk thistle have antioxidant and anticancer effects 7 8 12 16 17 , but there are no clinical data on survival or quality of life.
One case of toxicity sweating, nausea, vomiting, and weakness has been reported from use of milk thistle 5. Milk thistle inhibits cytochrome p 3A4 4 , which may result in increased levels of medications that are metabolized via this pathway. I have been dealing with diabetes with diet and exercise only for 15 years. Of course when I was diagnosed my MD who was quite elderly said that our goal was fasting blood sugar under — which was the standard back in the day before all the medications were available.
I have good blood pressure, good enough cholesterol, and so forth. I feel lucky to have been able to do that — I still need to lose weight, I could exercise more, but mainly I just eat incredibly carefully. As someone mentioned— gluten! I mean I always do many things — the new things that seem to coincide with the real improvement in a.
Oh and milk thistle at bedtime — on the theory that it supports my liver being calm and healthy at night. Anyway for the last few months the a.
It goes up a bit after breakfast and then comes down in the afternoon to 95 to Thanks, Mary and David. Mary, really do try and do some work with weights. I will ask my doctor about Byetta but am very hesitant about doing absolutely anything that might hurt my kidneys. And my insurance would pay for it. But I do think that most insurance will pad for it.
Byetta will NOT cause hypos, although other diabetes drugs that people may be taking at the same time certainly will. Just before she died, my late wife went on Byetta but suddenly stopped when she thought she had kidney disease. Actually, however, she had liver disease, and that is what killed her. Please check out with your doctor or Amylin which makes Byetta about whether you and others who have kidney disease can take Byetta. Thank you and what a good suggestion!
I think I will start riding a bike indoors, I am in Texas and it is just too darn hot in August to even move outside I do have a stationary recumbent bike and that is low impact too so it really is perfect, except for the boring factor. I will put it in front of the TV and maybe that will help.
In fact she did not diet at all with it. I bet David knows! I did not know Byetta was a problem with Kidney Disease. I know you have some dietary restrictions with Kidney Disease. My poor brother had that and brittle Diabetes. So many things he could not eat because of the 2 problems. Potassium was a problem veg and fruits high in this and protein was restricted because that is hard on the kidneys and carbs a big no no because of the Diabetes. So I am glad to hear you have it under control.
I would naturally like to avoid that path because Diabetes is hard enough without the added complications of Kidney problems. I think I will go back to vinegar shots and some form of protein if not cheese, maybe tuna yuck or cottage cheese until I can find out more about the milk and uncooked cornstarch.
That is probably the ONE vinegar I would not take because it is a sweetened vinegar. I drink mine in a shot glass and pretend it is an aperitif. Hi Mary, Thanks for your comments. I've also observed that many of the people that I know who struggle with weight loss make excuses. I've heard people say "I don't like to cook. It sounds harsh but it is what it is.
At the very least, order meals that contain non-processed or minimally processed ingredients if you just absolutely refuse to cook.
I noticed that there was no elaboration on HOW the product shrinks fat cells. What exactly does it do to shrink fat cells? What exactly is the process in which the product cuts up the fat in the cells? Once the fat is cut up, how is it burned? Does the fat convert into energy or does it work similar to that Alli product by preventing fat absorption? Unanswered questions like these make me skeptical and essentially deter me from buying a product.
What about the fat that collects around the organs? Does this product help with that also? Weightloss companies never talk about that. I'm done ranting for now. I enjoyed reading your article and I will be looking forward to trying some of your products. I definitely agree with what Alexsis said. She hit the nail on the head. What one person's body needs may differ from the next person. Many health claims are generalized statements.
I found that eating organic has really had a positive effect on me and my body. It's not safe to just blindly follow a health trend or even to listen to some of these so-called doctors without knowing your own body. For instance, it is recommended that you consume at least 2, calories a day. Personally, I don't believe that calories are the culprit. Also, there's no way in Hell I can eat that much.
The amount of food and the types of food you should eat is dependent on your body, your health, and your goals. Sorry Andrew but they are working for me! Too bad you got beat to the punch. Would have been nice if you discovered these huh? Jealousy is bliss my friend! First of all Andrew seems honest and concerned. I can not afford his vitamins. However I did take raspberry ketones, I did lose 20 pounds. As importantly, I did Dr Atkins diet. My body went into ketosis which has a distinct odor.
My point is while on the ketones my body DID burn fat and the smell of fat burning ketosis was also present while taking the ketones. They work for me is all I can say!!! How do we know you are not lying?! If he says that maybe they did work for those people everyone's body is different! I'm just saying I'm sticking with them and see how they work for me. I am glad I read your article about this product, I have never heard of Dr Oz and believe that any doctor worth his salt would not be advertising products that are going to make him money, oh yes you can be sure that Dr Oz didnt do the ad because it works but for the kick back he will receive,I ask myself why is Dr Oz making ads instead of practising the medicine he studied for, has he been struck off?
I dont know, but when I see doctors making ads that will make them money I have doubts about them. Having read as much as I can about this product I have no illusions that weight loss come from healthy eating and exercise not from this product. Well I hate to burst your bubble here. I have been off body by vi for sometime now. I just needed to comment on Dr. Oz premiere show this season. Titled Taking my Name Back,! He is a specialist as a Heart Surdeon, not a nutionalist I believe.
He can not be that ignorant. Is he not making enough money already? I find it sad to take advantage of viewers. They are looking for this miracle pill, and ordering every item he claims gets rid belly fat, or any area that we ate insecure about. His show should be renamed Diet Dr, Guru because that is mostly all he talks about. I miss the shows about all health issues. Please move on Dr. Oh and if Keytones worked for you than I am extremely happy for you.
Have a Good Day? Ok, so if it's not a miracle in a bottle then what is it. I have tried dieting and exercising and instead of losing weight, I gained it.
Started taking the raspberry keytones with my diet and exercise regime and suddenly I go from gaining weight to losing it. Thus far I have shed five pounds and I've been using it for two weeks now. Care to tell me how its not helping me? Mind you I was dieting and exercising six months prior to taking the pills. I began a diet and exercise program , using myfitnesspal. Same calories in, same amount of exercise. So I am astonished, but definitely encouraged to keep using them — why wouldn't I?
I have tried other formulas that claim to speed up metabolism, but none of them have made any difference. This one definitely has! People get desperate- esp when its so hard to take off the weight. But this stuff does NOT work- tried it with exercise and proper diet-Nothing! Thanks for the strong answer. Dr oz didn't say don't diet and don't exercise and just use rk's. I'm a bodybuilder who gets very lean. There are a ton of great fat burners on the market when combined with diet and exercise.
I use fat burners and also take RKs with these other formulas. My fat melts off. It's a combination between diet supplementation and exercise. So stop beating on dr oz he also says you need to diet and exercise.
My start weight was lbs. Didnt even try…they just worked! I'm a type 1 Diabetic and have always been taught that Ketones are bad. I know that when my body is sick with ketones I do tend to lose weight but it is life threatening. How are these Raspberry Ketones different? Perhaps Oz's show on raspberry ketones wil accidentally make people aware of the real ketones acetoacetate generated by the body for fuel when food is scarce, or, pay close attention , when the amount of ingested carbs is decreased, and amount of fat is increased.
There's tons of anecdotal evidence of the liver producing ketones when we ingest medium chain fats like those in MCT oil or coconut oil to help with the dementia associated with Alzheimers. There may be a prescription oral ketone ester available in several years developed just for this. I just purchased the ketone pills to find out for my self what the hype is all about.
You never know who to believe cause everyone is out to promote something. Thank you for a dose of reality in this silly craze. I'm constantly amazed by the high degree of ignorance out there. For those people, please take note of just a few basics: So if you run out of your initial supply of some supplement around this time, it's almost certainly irrelevant to any weight loss slow-down you experience. Good luck in your efforts, but let's get real.
Does it really not work? Hello andrew I thank you for the information, but I wish I had read into this product a little bit more before buying it. I have been taking raspberry ketones for about a week now and honestly I have expierenced no weight loss. Although I have been getting really sick. I havent been taking the pills for about a week and my stomache is still upset.
I wouldnt advise anyone take these to lose weight at all. I was just watching the show and had my cc out to order but wanted to find it cheaper but natural so stumbled on this article. Boy am I glad I did!
Thank u andrew for posting this information about raspbery ketone,i got so excited about it,and wanted to try it myself,i'm glad i read your article first before ordering this produt. Thank u so much for being honest. Wth 4 ketones a day and walking I'm 2 pounds shy of loosing lbs in 8 months.
Just took a moment to research the Keytone-Craz…. Well, back to the basics. Eat right and excerise. That I know works!!!! Thanks, this was soo helpful! So glad I didn't get sucked into this nonsense. Adam, what is your oppinion on the It Works! Do you think they're worth it or a waste of money? This is about Dr Oz as well. Why being in the public eye and supposedly having such qualitative knowledge does he support something that's totally false.
Used Raspberry Ketones for 4 months…. I do exercise, and I'm on a greenbean, stewed tomatoe, and cottage cheese diet now. I'm 36, and almost died. Just a note to all….. I started seeing lights Bright White Lights — like someone had taken a camera and took 50 pictures with the flash, right in my eyes , and ringing in my ears was AWFUL!
Someone young, and healthy might be able to take these, not me! Oz crap that doesn't work. I took these pills religiously for over two months. I gained half a pound in that time period and I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary nor consume more of anything.
I needed to get down to my optimum weight of roughly pounds and was hoping this stuff would help shed that fat in my middle that just doesn't seem to go away.
I had liposuction so there is no fat between my endodermis and ectodermis so its all inside my abdominal wall. I thought the Pure Raspberry Ketone people had a money back guarantee but after calling and then reading the fine print there is absolutely NO Guarantee that this stuff will work. They agreed to take back any unopened bottles for a refund of a pittance if I shipped it back, but no guarantee standing behind the claims they make as to weight loss.
Perhaps the Raspberry Ketone thing might have an initial placebo effect, as long as folks believe it will work, then for a while, they will believe the lie and they will temporarily lose weight. I was thinking about buying these miraculous pills but fortunatelly I found your article. Thank you for being honest I think the weight-loss business is one of the biggest ones and one of the most tricky ones.
They also have a testimonial by Rachel Ray along with a video of Dr Oz on one of the websites. She not only promotes the raspberry ketones but a colon cleanse as well! I do NOT trust this woman, because she would sell her mother to make a buck.
If this stuff truly worked, then Dr Oz would have used his good friend Oprah as a great example. Why wouldn't he give it to her and parade her out there? Because it doesn't work. I'm glad someone finally said something about this. None of it is true and I'm appalled they are goading people into buying into their lies using a TV doctor.
I wonder daily how much they had to pay him to put on that show. My roommate uses those pills granted I fear constantly for her chances of annorexia, seeing as she's only lbs and losing more and more and got the cheapest she could find in a buy one get one free package.
It's absurd people would actually believe this. You're reputation precedes you. You're products have lived up to your words. Thank you for the factual information on this product. Thank you for the warning and research.
Before falling victim to my raspberry ketone purchase, I knew the person to check with would be you, Andrew. I have never tried any diet pills because I didn't believe any of them would work, but since Dr. Oz is touting raspberry ketones as a miracle diet pill, how could it not be true?
He must be getting paid to advertise them is all I can think of. Thank you again, Andrew from saving me from wasting my money on a "miracle".
I knew I could count on you! In the mean time, for me, it's back to eating a healthy diet and getting more exercise to drop my 10 pounds! HI…I was interested in trying this product, but i see here you say is not real…well I was wondering if you had any REAL suggestions for people like me who truly wans to burn fat? Is there anything you can tell me that might work? Oz would make a good snake oil salesman.
He's gone over the top in his claims. Either he believes everything that he touts on his show, or he's just enjoying the feeling of guru to the masses. Thank you for saving my hard earned money.. Was just about to go to for Raspberry Ketone and now I'm not. I like you Andrew but I think it needs to be made clear that Dr. From what I have seen and heard, he is simply making people aware of what alternatives are out there, especially the ones that are less well known.
He also has a team of researchers check out any product claims. Oz openly states that it makes him furious when people think that he is promoting any particular product or brand. In fact, so much so, that he even had a show about all the products that were falsely being promoted online by placing his picture or name next to the product.
With that said, just put yourself in his position. What if every time you get on TV and talk about your vitamins, you find your face next a similar product or Dr. Oz took the time to put bash you all ove the internet. I know that you are not a doctor, yet I have always respected you and your opinion. In fact, one of the reasons I have purchased your products is because you are such a likable and mellow mannered person. However, hitting Dr, OZ below the belt is not only out of character for you unless you are just acting but it can hurt your overall business.
I hope you were just having a bad day when you wrote this. I have been taking raspberry ketone slim for 1 month now, and was very skeptical at 1st, but Andrew, Im 56 yrs. Other than that I have not changed my eating habits but find i feel not hungry as much and have more energy. I am not sure where anybody is getting their information from there is information all over the place about this product, don't feed into someone who wants you to buy only their products Andrew.
There is a dietitian from Kent State University who says this product works so well that they are afraid of people abusing it. So do research for yourself people, don't just follow what one person has to say. I feel sorry for the people who believe it is a hoax and don't try it. It works…when nothing else did…IT did! Well I have tired them and I lost 5lbs in a week so just like anything else I am sure they work for some and not for others and it was a 5.
I have never heard of Andrew until tonight when I stumbled upon your website. I have been investigating Raspberry Ketones for a week now and I am so confused its unreal. My brother is a personal trainer and I am his sidekick, working out and eating properly is VERY imprtant but I feel if somebody tried Raspberry Ketone and It works they should not be bashed for it.
Good luck everyone no matter what you decide!! When I first watched the video, I immediately know that it was good to be true. I am a Food Scientist and I know how research in these areas conducted.
Studies with test animals can't always reflect same outcome for human subjects. Also as you mentioned in your article, they fed in such high doses compare to their body weight that trying to bring the same results for human subjects it will be hard to reach to same concentrations through supplementation with mg pills etc.
Even if, studies conducted on humans can not always reflect true results for millions of people around world. It is good to know that there are people like you puts information for consumers to make them more aware. I never trust products that claim to be "weight loss miracles", however I have read this to be healthy regardless of it's weight loss benefits.
The last sentence says "In fact, I would strongly caution against it's use. Well my son has been taking this pill for 2 months. He was and now is no diet change at all this DOES Work I have just started taking it and no diet change have lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. I am amazed at some of the comments on this site I stumbled across. There are quite a few of you who seem to be just gushing over Andrew like he's some kind of human God.
I don't even see an MD behind his name. Oz never once endorsed a specific company or brand of the Raspberry Keytones to try, so he's not getting paid to tout a particular brand. As a medical person his demonstration with balloons as cells seemed very plausible in conjunction with his description of what was happening to them. I have muscular dystrophy and don't have the option to do "normal" types of exercise, but I do go to physical therapy, and I will start using the Raspberry Keytones I bought today, as directed.
If they work for me that'll be great. If they don't I'm not going to bad mouth Dr. Oz for introducing this product to me. I'll just chalk it up to an experience that didn't work for me. I have been taking the raspberry ketone capsule for about four days, so far I do feel better and I used to have very swollen ankles and feet, the swelling disappeared after the first day and is still gone.
So I for one am grateful to Dr. Oz for mentioning this on his show!! I think dr oz has promoted some senseless products on his show. His audience believes his every word. He is misleading and im surprised he still gets an audience. Go to weight watchers. I saw the show and jumped on the band wagon. I didn't lose any weight instead the pills made me anemic.
I stopped using them and my cell count returned to normal. I spent over an hour on the internet trying to get a straight answer or even something consistant on whether or not there were any side effects associated with raspberry keytones, does it really work for weight loss, is there a difference between snythetic vs natural raspberries, and am now more confused then when I started researching. It's so amazing to me that there are so many different opinions on one product.
I called them to inquire whether or not they were snythetically manufactured or natural and was told that all Rasberry Ketone Products being sold are snythetic. After researching clinical studies found out that the only results found were based on rodents, nothing on humans.
The more I read online the more frustrating I got. How can anyone sell a product making claims that are false just to make money…. Misleading for a profit…. I wasn't even able to obtain side affects.. I have lost over ten pounds in two weeks without changing the way I have eaten in the past? I have not been able to lose weight dieting and with this product the weight is literally falling off me. I'm not as hungry. For whatever reason Rasberry Keytones with Green Tea is working for me.
I just purchased the RK Diet for my whole family. We are all different weights and could stand to shed some pounds. As many of you, I am skeptical on if this will truly work, so I starting reading more on the internet, which led me to this site. As a mother with 1 young adult who i have watched for over 10yrs. I am not looking for a miracle drug, just something that could give a kick start. I am not a follower of AL or Dr. But was amazed at how many people commented on this article and were willing to bash something they have not even tried?
I am in my mid 40's and my husband was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor over 12 yrs. One of my best friends was diagnosed at 33 yrs. She removed one breast, and over the past 17 yrs. She was an avid exerciser and ate all natural foods, took vitamins and was a mere lbs.
I have lost over 12 very close family members to other types of cancer and ailments who were once healthy prior to my husbands' diagnosis.
We are all going to die when our number is called. If we want to spend our hard earned money on a so called miracle diet, so be it! Everyone in life needs to do what you feel is best at that given time and stop reading and believing what everyone else has to say. If you believe something is going to help you lose weight then go for it! If it doesn't work, then try something else.
YES, we all know the best thing is diet, portion control and exercise. Why burst someone's bubble before they even give it a try? What works for some, may not work for others.
There is a higher power then all of us that comes to take us when our number is called. Not AL's vitamins or Dr. OZ's promotion of Diet programs are going to save us.
If one of my family members can lose some of the lbs. Then I am willing to give it a try. Get a life of your own and stop criticizing on the internet! I dont mean to disappoint everyone but i have been taking the raspberry ketone for more than two months. I was not trying to lose weight however i honestly lost 22 pounds the first month. I did not change my eating haits or go on a diet. And to top it off i recently quit smoking after 32 years of doing so. Not saying the raspberry ketone had anything to do with it i just needes to quit.
Also my wife takes the green coffee bean supplement and that seems to work for her. So U all think what u will the raspberry ketone actually does work. The trick is take two mid-morning then two mid-afternoon doesnt matter if u eat or dont. This is the way it works for me U. File the rasphberry ketone pills in the same container as the acai berry, green coffee bean extract and who knows how many other weight loss pills!
I am amazed that a respected man such as Dr. Oz continues to fall into the trap. One would begin to wonder if he is actually doing research before touting the benefits of these pills. I know there is no miracle pill, I know that what we all need to do to lose weight is proper diet and excerise, however, I Have tried the ketones and green coffee bean ON top of my regimen and I can promise you, there is no miracle loss, but I have noticed a difference!! Funny everyone on these posts are praising Andrew.
Andrew is a Competitor so of course he's against Oz selling large Amounts of any supplement. For every doubter there is someone who believes in every supplement.
Andrew could be just a sore loser. I say try what you want it may work for you. At some point we just need to do the right thing, take ownership of the habits that do not lend to desireable body weight.
Eat foods as grown, get off the processed, refined, high fat, salt and sugar, move more, and get healthy the way our bodies are designed to do. Beck Powers Wellness Coach. I just wish I could find something safe to take for me I have highblood pressure and I'm a pre diabetic.
I've lost 43 pounds eating healthy and exercising.. Still eating healthy and exercising. I believe u and agree with u on all your findings, i have done research myself and we r all looking for the EASY! You know what they say about opinions… everybody has one. I've been using the raspberry ketones for about 3 weeks now and have lost 14 pounds. Much less hungry than before and definitely more energy.
Are you not touting it because you don't SELL it? I'm sure you don't agree but then again there is no money if you don't sell and tout your products is there. Unfortunantly I have been using the Rasberry Ketone pills for a little over a month. The pills actually made me very tired and sleepy.
I thought that maybe those side effects would wear off but they didn't. I waisted a lot of money on this product. Taking pure rasberry ketone mg twice a day lost 32 lb in 8months with no change in diet or execise i love dr oz i have never been able to lose weight like this before from to im under lb for the first time in over 20years. I'm glad i read this before I ordered raspberry ketones..
What's funny is I saw this article online and clicked on it not knowing it was Andrew Lessman who wrote it. As soon as i saw that, the article meant so much more. I have been taking Andrews vitamins for a few years now. I love that they are made in America and are the highest quality i have found and he seems to really care about the products he makes..
What's also funny is the moment i heard about the supplement i thought of Andrew Lessman and if i could order them from him because i trust his products so the fact i stumbled into this article if his is line fate..
So he saved me a lot of money.. But im trying to do it the right way.. Well I'm telling you It does work! I lost 35 pounds and did nothing different then before I started the raspberry ketones..
I had diabetes and now I don't.. I'm not one for believing everything I hear so I try things for myself and It really does work like Dr oz said…I'm living proof, all of my co-workers were like what are you doing to loose waight and I show them the bottle but now it's hard too find in the stores..
I took as directed along with the green coffee extract with a full meal and two full glasses of water and felt very sick and dizzy afterwards. I'm somewhat sensitive to strong meds, but thought I'd warn anyone with similar problems to be careful. Not sure if I'll loose weight, but the side effects I had are not worth it. Judging from most comments I've read on various sites, people actually using the ketones find it works. While the writer of this article makes some good points, I find it troubling he says something doesn't work without conducting his own research.
PErsonally speaking, i've been using the ketones for a few weeks and have lost both weight and inches, though to be honest I have no idea if this is due to the change in diet and exercise, the ktones, or a combination of both. By the way, i don't know if Dr. I was just going to order theraspberry key tone pills but when I read the warningsigns iknew it was a fake Andrew I need som oills to make me loose at lease 60 pounds please help me my weight is out of controll??
I tried Raspberry Ketone sold as Sams and while I did not expect it to work I still lost ten pounds in two weeks. So I will have to say that hell yes it did work for me.
You say that there is no research to prove it works. There is also no research to prove it does not work. So my conclusion is that you are another fool that is dumb enought to make statements about something that you have not tried and have no personal knowledge about. I think ur just attacking dr. Oz for the simple fact u didn't come up with it first. I did order some and without changing any habits I dropped 30 lbs over two months. So it worked for me idk what ur talking about. I was looking for something more reliable on the subject because honestly, I was ready to find some of this raspberry miracle for myself.
Everything I found on it sounded so ridiculous but its allure was still powerful. Your testimony brought me back to my senses. If there were a miracle pill to lose weight there would not be so many obese people!
What works is making better choices protein, fruit, veggies, whole grains portion size and exercise! Weight Watchers is where it is at. I think this is the biggest bs. Oz testimony that say it is good for you AND can help you lose stubborn fat.
However, it was never intended to be weight loss cure. I have also lost weight from using it but I combined it with other vitamins. I do cardio workouts and eat better. No matter what it is you have to work for it. Anyone who believes that they are going to pop a pill and lose weight while sitting on the couch eatting chips and oreos is delusional anyway.
Anything claiming to be a "miracle" by someone is only conducting the "miracle" of inflating the promoter's pocketbook! Oz really had found a miracle weight loss pill, don't you think he would have shared it with his buddy Oprah and she would be a bit on the thinner side?
The only true fix is getting up off your duff and working out and watching what crap you put in your mouth. Go back to eating your veggies without dousing in butter and eating fresh foods not things with a bunch of preservatives and additives that we still don't know the health implications of and you'll notice the changes! Place names in Cheshire seem to indicate new villages, may be on the tributaries of the rivers, with the English settlements undisturbed.
There was plenty of space But this was normal bog standard development. Additionally new Cheshire specialisations were beginning to evolve. Salt making was undoubtedly the economic leader but dairy farming and horse breeding were widespread together with other activities associated with the cow dead or alive - milk, meat, butchering, tanning Nevertheless although Chester and Cheshire were strategically important for defence and the trading of salt, the countryside was on the outskirts of Mercia and still only sparsely populated.
Interminable woods and forests lead us to guess that at this time Antrobus was populated largely by trees and scrub Unlike previous assimilations of alien invasions into Cheshire, this time Earl Edwin's 'Chester-men' fought ferociously. After all, the confrontations with the Welsh and the Danes had been largely successful and English pride was at stake. But this time was different as William ruthlessly prevailed and built his castle at Chester.
Whole swathes of land were destroyed, villages razed, crops burnt, livestock slaughtered and people rendered landless, homeless and dispossessed.
In particular, in a last ditch attempt at local resistance was bitterly put down and draconian measures taken to impress on native Anglo Saxons the futility of future resistance. Much had been laid waste by the severity and brutality of Norman imposition. Domesday records Cheshire as a potentially rich farming community stretching far beyond its modern borders. But although it had potential it was currently rated a 'wasta, abandoned and useless land'. For sure this assessment reflected the scorched earth policy of the Norman armies but also perhaps the tendency for Domesday to focus on plough lands and less on the meadows and pastures.
Cheshire folk were specialising in rich gazing facilities for their cows. Hugh arrived in Chester with this entourage of Lords replete with the spoils of war - the land and the folk who worked the land Cheshire men have never lost their independent bent The English in Cheshire were now serfs, labourers, bound to the land economically, socially and legally through property rights.
The Lords owned the land, the land owned villeins and the villeins owned the cattle. The value of the Lord's estate was measured by the villeins he owned, and thus the number of cattle he owned. The feudal Lords didn't trade, they were a rent seeking elite, motivated to maintain tax revenues and accumulate capital in larger estates In contrast the villeins were instinctive traders They were motivated to innovate, to increase productivity, to generate surpluses The ancient ancestors of the Gandys, Hindleys and Birchalls were villeins who survived as a deep story unfolded But there were diminishing returns from taxes.
A complex battle was played out as the Feudal Lords attempted to tax any success, only to see the growth of enterprise stifled and subsequent revenues decline Cheshire as a County Palatine, and places like Northwich with Borough status had a degree of independence which spawned economic growth as some freedoms were protected and rents tended to be lower.
Cheshire folk always seemed to be late arriving at the party, but they knew about learning. It was not a case of 'better late than never' but learning that 'the second mouse got the cheese'!
It would take the best part of two centuries for the characteristic English culture to re-emerge from the oppressive Norman feudal system. Make no mistake the commercial trail blazer in England was the sheep not the cow Cheshire's opportunity came later when increased populations needed more and more food Resources were diverted from successful sheep farming into expensive wars Edward III's wool trade shenanigans presented stark economic lessons which were later all too often forgotten?
Back in Cheshire times were hard, no one said it was easy, then the black death decimated the population The economic arguments were clear, the lords took advantage of enclosure to add to their capital accumulation at the expense of the small farmers, the villeins, who lost their rights.
However property rights worked their magic for everyone as productivity took off. Things now began to move; synergistic deals were everywhere as the customary tenants and freemen exchanged their surpluses and inventions. With these economic advances Cheshire recovered from the destruction of the Norman Conquerors in good nick Beowulf had a well established niche as an exemplar of Anglo Saxon culture, perhaps less well know, but just as crucial to evolving Anglo Saxon behaviour was Godric.
Godric was a pedlar, but a pedlar with a difference The growth of trade in the middle ages was of overwhelming significance. It was the expansion of trade in a later age which pushed England into the industrial revolution. The written word had been the domain of the king's court and the clerics, so there were few accounts of trade and the early merchants.
Godric of Finchale was an exception He was an itinerant but finally settled in Finchale by the River Wear. So Godric was not a Cheshire man but undoubtedly his peers were also hawking their goods around the Weaver valley The success of the pedlars came from their ability to quickly bring to the rural areas not only the newest items for sale but also tales of exciting exotic urban life.
The pedlars survived but they were only a small part of the exchange scene. Markets for trading surpluses had existed in Chester, Middlewich and Nantwich well before And slowly in the 13th century the more exotic goodies began to appear in the markets Twenty-three official markets were known in medieval Cheshire, but there were probably twice that number of unofficial markets where specialised skills could be exchanged and folk could make a living.
Apart from market days, trades were also promoted several times a year when townships of any size held fairs for business and entertainment wherever hard work was successful there was always much pleasuring In Cheshire the fairs were dominated by cattle and horses but other crafts servicing the farms became established.
Water wheels were powering corn milling. Lead and iron ores were brought down from Flintshire to supply the local craftsmen in local smithies and the sheep were never far away Not far from Antrobus, Northwich was a prosperous market centre with two fairs each year and every Friday was a market day Cheshire farmers were investing and improving In Wat Tyler successfully pushed at the open door of economic reality in Fobbing, Essex The Lords could not collect their rent unless the farms produced their goods and from the earliest of times surpluses were traded in the markets which were natural complements to the manorial economy.
In Chief Justice Brian ruled that, 'tenants at the will of their Lord had rights' The payment of their customary rent protected the tenant from eviction by a trespassing Lord. The obligation to pay the rent involved a right to undisturbed use of the property. This was Common Law evolving, what appeared at the time to be trivial, had far reaching implications.
The Englishman's home was his castle In The Pilgrimage of Grace was another reminder that the king was accountable to the people and people in Yorkshire were different. England was now confronting a thorny issue, in matters of belief it was impossible to obtain a consensus, some folk were Catholic some were Protestant The Anglo Saxon free spirit demanded free choice, imposition from a distant Pope in Rome was not on.
A radical change followed as Cheshire's palatinate status collapsed and the vast estates of the Abbots of Norton and Vale Royal were broken up and lands redistributed, unleashing a new wave of new ownership and new investment. But dissolution of the local church was not on, folk wanted their own church in their own parish, more opportunities for the farmers in new churches of their choice Chester became a cathedral city and The King's School was founded!
But as fast as specialisations proliferated restrictions grew and Chester's Aldermen jealously protected the monopolistic feuding craft guilds from strangers and upstarts by imposing restrictive practices, inspectors, apprenticeships and fees in return for an exclusive right to trade In Bishop Latimer was persuasive; a quadrupling of the rent on his father's farm had had catastrophic effects, 'he was not able to do anything for his prince, for himself, nor for his children, nor give a cup of drink to the poor' In in an atmosphere of slow emancipation the ancient salt production system in Northwich matured But as if a object lesson on the baleful influence taxation, the infamous salt tax held back production and innovation until it was repealed in with salutary effect.
The revival of learning and the growing market freedoms of the Renaissance were matched by new religious freedoms of the Reformation. The English Reformation was essentially a cultural phenomenon; the Anglo Saxon independent free thinkers were thinking differently In this sense the Reformation and the later Civil War were not about Catholics verses Protestants but rather about free choice versus imposition A clear pattern had emerged by this time.
The descendants of the ancient Norman Feudal Lords were still destined to be Jacobite supporters of the Young Pretender, still ensconced in their manors and still owners of great tracts of the land.
But something had changed, these relics of the past were in office but not in power; a new middle class had an obligation to pay their taxes for protection but had also established a right to choose. And in the cities it was the grocer who was emerging from the Medieval period as a force to be reckoned with He was also deeply religious putting his trade under the protection of a patron saint - St Anthony.
And at the grass roots, in the villages, far from the politics of the kings courts, the Anglo Saxon system of customary law and their vernacular prospered A flavour of the Cheshire environment at the time can be gleaned from the shenanigans of Robert Nixon who was born in and farmed not far from Frandley in Over; land that fell Sir Thomas Holcroft's way after Harry Eight sorted out Vale Royal Abbey in He spoke of the pathetic rivalry between the Augustinian Canons of Norton and the Cistercians at Vale Royal which was resolved only when the stones from the ruins of these local institutions were combined to build the bridge over the Weaver at Acton.
He mentioned the menace of the Lord Holcroft heriot, the fascinating scenes in Delamere Forest and the floods in Northwich from rivers and salt trade subsidence. Robert gained some national fame when news of Harry Seven's win at Bosworth Field filtered through to rural Cheshire and confirmed his ridiculous predictions. The king himself was impressed This great Cheshire story has been preserved in the extensive archives of the Warburtons of Arley Hall and the Leicesters of Tabley Hall This was the environment that William Gandy inherited when he was born in Frandley in Cheshire during the 17th Century of Revolution.
The Gandys fight for opportunities? William Gandy was Margaret Gandy's great great great great grandfather, and in Margaret married George Hindley, a cordwainer living in Antrobus. Gandy genes were good, destined to power many generations of Cheshire Hindleys and, of course, after , some Birchalls When William Gandy was born in there were three aspects of the Antrobus environment which dominated his every move William Gandy was a yeoman of repute, an established Sevenoaks farmer.
William's ancestral Gandys were villeins of the feudal system. They had been in a cleft stick, no oath of fealty to the Norman Lord meant they had no land and no cows The survival of the family depended on the output from the farm which was dominated by the milk yields, excellent butter, juicy beef and scrumptious cheese from the Gandy cows Between AD and there were many changes in animal husbandry in northwest Europe but things were slow.
The most important change culminated in the transition from an agricultural subsistence economy to a cash commodity economy, where the production of surpluses and long distance trade became indispensible opportunities. After surviving the plague and the famines, the population of England nearly doubled between and , and this was the time the Gandys got their act together. There was nothing more central to economics and social history than food, and the Gandys were first and foremost farmers, producers of food In the Gandys were in better nick than they had been for ages and they were now bent on exercising their initiative.
William took after his dad who else? And after opportunities started to open up for a new 'middle class' William Gandy junior was the only son of William, he married Marie Brodhurst and more diversity was injected into the Gandy genes.
He inherited the family farm. Everybody seemed to live on a small farm in the Bucklow Hundred and the Gandys were at Frandley, Sevenoaks near Antrobus in the middle of the Whitley Lordship. The Gandy farm was around 23 acres on the wholesome Cheshire plain, it included a cottage, access to the commons and a 'moss room' for peat fuel. It was hard physical work as living beasts constantly demanded attention, but there were new opportunities They started to enjoy some relief from oppressive rents, and a magical mixture of low costs and high produce prices in the Northwich markets enabled them to accumulate some capital to fund their innovations.
There was every incentive for profits to be reinvested in stock. The Gandys were 'tenants at will', but London was far away and Cheshire had an independent tradition as a County Palatine. In accordance with custom, generations of Gandys had transferred their land at the Manor Court, passing their holdings down to their children, they were 'copyholders', their tenure 'copied' into the Court roll As sitting tenants who paid their rent the Gandys jumped at an opportunity to become 'fee farmers' as the 'freehold' of their farm was offered for sale In Sir Peter Leycester recorded the deal He was stymied, he badly needed money for his wars but he was unable to raise rents to compensate for his inflation because of the law of the land!
Selling freeholds was his last resort option to raise some cash. Presumably the equivalent of the Canaletto had already gone? Or was he just frit of crowd trouble? The economic significance of these developments were that a diversity of small working farmers owned their own land and became vitally interested in competitive technological innovation and the return on their investment. Twenty shillings to repair the road between his house and Gibb Hill.
Forty shillings to his sister Elizabeth Devyas. Eleven shillings and thirteen pence to repairs for Great Budworth church. Standing bed and accompaniments to his grandson and god son William Gandy. One cow, forty shillings and silver 'which was her grandmother's' to Katherine Eaton, his daughter's child if and when she married by the consent of his son William. Twenty shillings to William Fernely his kinsman.
Napie and lynens to be shared between his wife Maude and his daughter in law Marie Gandy. Husbandry ware, iron ware and implements of husbandry to his son William. Best coat, doublet and best pair of Breeches to George Fernely.
Best hat to his wife Maude. Gowne to his son William. Remainder shared between Maude and his son William.
Maude and William executors. Money and property of quite substantial amounts were left to his wife, older sons and daughters and money in trust for his younger children to be paid when they reached Various other bequests to relations and friends and including the poor of the parish.
The custom was to divide wealth equally between the children, although the eldest son tended to continue with the farm, there were opportunities for the others to continue their education and acquire 'professional' skills in the church, in law and in the city. And no longer was it necessary to venture to London as rewarding opportunities were opening up in Warrington and Manchester. In these circumstances further pressure was put on the farm for hard work and cost innovations if capital commitments to all the siblings were to be met.
The production of marketable surpluses became essential. The important outcome was to spread opportunity widely and increase the chances of success in the family.
A far cry from the gentry practice of primogeniture which recklessly pinned all the family accumulations on the eldest son with the existing farm Underpinning all the trading activities in Cheshire, and everywhere else, was the economic principle of 'comparative advantage', no one had articulated the principle but it illuminated the reality of life in Sevenoaks.
Cheshire folk were specialising in salt and cows. In when William Gandy senior was born the Gandy farm in Sevenoaks was starting to trade its special surpluses With the milk from their gushing cows and the local Northwich salt, it was scrumptious and the surplus cheese always sold well in the Northwich market Cheshire was no longer a remote economic hinterland There was no will but an inventory of monies owed to him has survived including -.
William Gandy was the first Gandy Quaker. Around he married Katherine in Frandley and they had two surviving daughters and many lost babies -. Backed by the steady income from the farm William had the time to fry other fish The main road from London ran through Frandley and George Fox himself visited William several times, including one occasion when Fox noted in his journal there were 2, people present.
The Chester Historic Society recorded these visits in This, of course, was a time of political and religious strife and William and the Frandley Quakers did not escape trauma The present Quaker meeting house, built in , is adjacent to the site of the Gandy farm. The burial ground established in and a Booke of Burialls for the county of Chester, commencing 3rd of ye 11th month , suggests that there were well over people buried there.
William Gandy the 4th, although an active Quaker was also an active farmer. Charles Foster has told the story of how William's beliefs must have supported his growing business and on October 10th he shipped a cargo of 30 tons of Cheshire Cheese to London in the 'Ann of Brighton'.
This was the first year that cheese ships departed from a spanking new 'Z' shaped warehouse in Sutton Weaver beside the Frodsham Bridge. Built by Sir George Warburton, this was a masterful investment, helping the new entrepreneurs and their lucrative trade with his 'old capital'. Frodsham and Sankey became the important shipping points for the Cheshire cheese trade.
As the Dee silts constantly curtailed shipping, the cheese trade started to move from Chester to the Mersey. These inland Mersey ports prospered until challenged by Liverpool with its deeper water facilities in the 18th century. As the Arley Hall map shows the Frodsham shipments were thriving in From a warehouse near it, much cheese is shipped for Liverpool.
A work for the refining of rock salt is at some distance on the bank of the river. The channel here is deep and clayey, and a disagreeable object at low water'. Clearly from Cheshire Cheese was manufactured in Frandley by the Gandys and shipped in quantity from the new facilities at Frodsham for the nourishment of the hungry hoards in the big city. His mother, of course, was Mary Hall and William's will mentions -.
The will also records property and lands in Frandley, Cogshall and Sevenoaks. William was obviously a wealthy man and this is confirmed by the Hearth Tax return of where he is shown to have the largest house in Sevenoaks. The Gandy wealth appeared to have been enhanced by providing a money lending service to their less well off neighbours; William junior died and young William died were each owed considerable amounts of money at the time of their death and by the death of the fourth William in quite extensive lands and properties had been amassed.
June Harrison 's notes on William Gandy, the Quaker make interesting reading At the grass roots, in the villages, a picture emerges of the four William Gandys; a picture of survival on the farms and the immensity of religion as the focus of village life. These were pious times. Folk looked to their church and their local community for help and guidance.
Of course the Lords recruited their armies and rivalries were rife; almost invariably spats over territorial ambitions and access to tax revenues. And certainly rivalries in the churches were nothing new; they had been clear throughout history And for three generations that community was a community of Friends. Quakerism had its beginnings in the North of England, it was based on the personal introspection of a shoemaker's apprentice, George Fox.
The Society of Friends had their own strictly independent relentless beliefs -. Gods way was through internal mediation deep down in every individual The Friends often refused to swear oaths and pay tithes so inevitably they suffered 'legal' persecution.
Rather like the Jews before them, they were often denied 'orthodox' careers so many triumphed in the alternative business of business
